I like to work synchronously and accompany conversations with white boarding or some simple visuals. Somehow using multiple comms channels helps bring down the error rate and allows for course correction “Here what I mean.” “No not that, this.” etc.
When I don't, there's a chance my brain will interpret what you say differently than you meant. It’s not me intentionally mishearing. It’s the other thing ( 🧠 ) making connections you didn't intend. I may have assumptions you've heard and understood what I've said and you haven't.
Communication is hard. People use the same words to mean different things. Or different words to mean the same thing. Or same words and same thing but different emphasis or different reasons.
Assuming some degree of failure and getting feedback is key.
